Out of the top 10 million websites, WordPress now powers 33.4 % of them. That is more than one third of the top websites in the world. The original share is assumed to be around 50 % of world's all websites

Our market share has been growing steadily over the last few years, going from 29.9% just one year ago to 33.4% now. We are, of course, quite proud of these numbers!
In 2005, WordPress had 50,000 downloads, by January 2011, www share grew to 16.3 %. The latest release which came out on February 21 st has close to 14 million downloads so far.

WordPress thanks its huge community of volunteers for this success and for being free all this time.

I wonder where Joomla and Drupal stand on this chart.

They are at less than 10 percent each. I thought Joomla and Drupal would have at least 20 % market share together.

Ease of use might have decided about the popularity. Also those block based site builder has made things easy for WordPress. A lot of people adopted WordPress because of it.
